When my husband was in grad school for computer science, a bunch of us would to get together in one of the labs and play Doom.

One of the players was always scheduled to be working that particular lab, so whenever someone would come in to use a computer, he (or she) would say, "Sorry, all the computers are booked up for the next few hours."

Back in infancy of the internet, I used to lug my computer to a friends house to play doom against him.

I didn't have the internet at the time, and my mum wouldn't pay for a two hour phonecall for a direct IP connection.

Oh, and by the way, my computer managed to run the battlefield 2 demo fairly comfortably (nearly everything turned off).

It's a trade off between the work in lugging your machine and the amount of fun you get from the event. For those of us who do it relatively often, you get good at it. I have a nice carrying harness for my PC and a spare set of cables that only travel (so I can leave my other ones hooked up at home). Since LCDs are getting cheap(er), that's becoming more popular since they are considerably more portable.

A LAN party sounds like great fun, but it seems like such a pain in the ass to lug your whole PC, Monitor, cables, and etc around town.

Unless you have a gaming laptop, which is nearly an oxymoron because how to keep up with new video cards that way? Go external? Nah.

For about a year, we played Quake3 at work every day during lunch. It was much fun, and a great stress-reliever, even though I was terrible at it.

Whew, good to know I'm not the only one -- after a Dr. Mario bender in college, I would be driving and start thinking, If that blue car moves into the space above the other blue car, they'll make a match and disappear--then I can merge over into the empty space that will be left. (Hmmm, I wonder if ODOT would be interested in this traffic reducing solution.)

Well, I now have broadband, but no battlefield 2, or a computer beefy enough to run it.
