Earworm, a loan translation of the German "Ohrwurm", is a term for a song stuck in one's head, particularly an annoying one. - Wikipedia

My battle with earworms is relatively well documented here. Recently, though, a buddy of mine came up with a way he says is guaranteed to get a song out of your head: Start singing "Iron Man" by Black Sabbath (or, in a pinch, "This Means War" by Busta Rhymes and Ozzy Osbourne).

Of course, the result is that you have "Iron Man" stuck in your head, but that's really not a bad thing.

Initial testing seems promising. After repeatedly humming the Tetris theme, stuck in my head simply because someone said "Tetris", I decided to try it out. If nothing else, thinking about "Iron Man" in an attempt to dislodge the earworm seemed to have helped.

Results may vary.

---From OzzyC---
Yet another reason to thank the Ozz-man for his musical contributions to society.

I finally know the term for that. We call that LSS locally... Last Song Syndrome.. cornball, I know. Earworm is a whole lot better. I need to spread the term out, after I get out the Tetris theme out of my head. thanks for the earworm...
I've had that problem. Of course, for me it was after I watched "The Producers"...

Which was bad, because when you realize you've been humming "Springtime for Hitler" for 3 hours, you feel like a really awful person.

OzzyC: Incidentally, I do a really bad imitation of Ozzy Osbourne. Which makes it not too different from most of the imitations I do.

Etcher: GFY.

Alternati: LSS is good, I like acronyms. Reminds me of TNS: Taco Neck Syndrome. I did consider the ethical implications of posting about my earworm, knowing that it would likely instigate it in other people (much like yawning passes from person to person, and typing the word yawning, or reading it a lot, makes you have to yawn. Yawn.) Ultimately I realized I have no journalistic ethics and posted anyway.

Prop: I tend not to think of showtunes as earworms, except for anything from Annie, the music to which is, if I'm not mistaken, considered a crime by the Geneva Convention.

I currently have "I Got My Mind Set On You" in there. Which is weird, because I'm pretty sure the last time I heard it was about 15 years ago.

Show tunes are particularly catching, and as the Proprietor noted, the Producers has some ones that are awkward to be caught singing.

"Keep it gay, keep it gay, keep it gay!"

"This song is just six words long..."

"Keep it gay" is bad, but singing "Everybody has AIDS" from the fictional musical "LEASE" in "Team America: World Police" is certainly worse.

Man, that was a lot of quotation marks.
