I've seen the ads for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest a few times now. Is it just me, or is anybody else wondering why Jack Sparrow is fighting Mind Flayers?

And it was Will that had the dice!

I just saw the new "Pirates" film. I hadn't seen the first.

I was struck by the fact that Captain Jack appears to be some sort of weird amalgam of, like, Captain Hook, Richard Simmons, Keith Richards and comedian Ron White. He's simultaneously pirate-y and sort of swooshy-hip-swagger-y and has a lip-curling issue that reminds me of the aforementioned Mr. White.

The dudes he's fighting DO appear to resemble the Mind Flayers, though. One guy just had a starfish stuck to his temple the entire movie. I mean, is it really that much trouble to excuse yourself to the W.C. for two seconds to de-starfish yourself?

A deeper question would be, how could TSR rip off Lovecraft?

Though if they didn't steal monsters from every bit of fiction they could, the Monster Manual would be mighty thin.
