I received a postcard the other day. Check it out:

And here's the postmark:

It came from miss Litany Webb, a young woman who as I write this is making her way across the frozen plains of Alaska. If you haven't before, check out her blog:
The Pilgrimage of Litany. A very good read. Thanks for the postcard, Lit! It's a very cool "souvenir". In five years, when you guys finish your voyage and are famous, I'll be selling it for mucho dinero and retiring.
The postcard reminds me of how amazing the Internet really is. Sure, a good 90% of the content is probably crap (or pr0n), but the fact that such a vast resource of knowledge is available at our fingertips (at least for many of us) is simply astounding. What's more, and why I bring it up now, is that the Internet has provided a mechanism by which we can meet and interact with individuals that we otherwise may have never had the chance to before.
When I first discovered
IRC chat in the mid-late 90's, I met all sorts of interesting people. I had friends (or at least acquaintances) in a number of states, Canada, and as far away as Australia. Although I have pretty much lost touch with them all (it's hard enough staying in touch with people that live in my own county) I'm happy that I had the chance to meet and get to know them. Now, in the mid aughts, I am meeting fellow gamers from across the States and the world via
Xbox Live, and most recently I have been fortunately to encounter some unique and interesting individuals through the world of blogging.
What a great time to be alive.
For those of you wondering, the distance between Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, and North Royalton, Ohio, is 3032 miles (4880 km), as the crow flies. The snail mail was postmarked on the 1st and arrived on the 5th.
